This is my long list of DVDs collection. Yes, I've paid for every one of these (as in retail, not that there's some badge of honor in doing so... but some day, I want to see my name credited to films or adaptations of scripts, and it would be nice to know that at least most of it viewed was paid for), and sometimes, have had cause to repurchase them to put into or restore to my collection. There are many, many more that I don't own, but borrowed from the public library. I'll add those (such as the various Kim Ki-duk films) at a later date, when I scare up (locate, dig up) all my check-out receipts.... I have this list (or, most of it, rather) on flixster, but for some reason, I want to go through the exercise of writing it all again.
Here it is, in no particular order, by the English titles, and, if provided on the disc, the non-English title as well. (Some I own, but lent out to friends who never returned them, and since I never maintained a coherent lend list, I won't know which ones are missing until I dig up an even older list against which to compare... And, there are some 10 I gave away... Even though I liked the discs... )
Also, some of these I bought as far back as 1998 or 1999. Generally, most of them I bought within 2 years of their release in the US or in the West, much to my frustration, since some of the distributors here can't pick good movies, or they take too long getting stuff into the outlets, and so, we have to learn to go to the Asian DVD sales sites to get our fixation. Sometimes, I've bought purely based on the back panel description, sometimes the artwork, sometimes the names of the actors/actresses I recognize. I have NEVER bought a DVD on the basis of it being an adaptation of an anime or manga work. I simply have not had that level of fanaticism to know that Azumi (the movie which I like very much and have on the list) came from this or that. I thoroughly, THOROUGHLY enjoyed Battle Royale (and BR II) and Oldboy and Azumi and although Oldboy came from Japanese comics/manga/anime, it seems Koreans REALLY REALLY know how to drag tears out of even though most soulless of humans... When I watch Korean films, I have to keep tissues nearby to catch things. I showed Battle Royale and BR II in the hostel in Tokyo in 2004/2005, and those made adults cry, though some tried to hide it. The girls cried openly, but some guys tried to hide it, or they hugged their girls closer. Funeral March and Bullets of Love had people crying, too. Then, off they went to Gaspanic to indulge their beer fixations and to shed the exhaustion brought on by the crying and mental gymnastics required to get through some of those films. Most who saw Pitch Black enjoyed it better than The Chronicles of Riddick, even though they never knew Vin Diesel was in Pitch Black, and even though they loved The Chronicles of Riddick. I changed that by showing Pitch Black to them.
Anyway, I digress... ON WITH THE LIST:
Heading each film or movie title is an asterisk (*), present for readability. Plus symbols (+) indicate how much I like it on a scale of 1 to 5; higher than 5 means off the personal chart because I like or love it at first watching, and can watch it 3 or 4 times a year at the drop of a hat...
